GLOBAL – Reading an interview with Nokia CEO OPK in India’s Economic Times, a few lines just struck me. Talking about the evolution of the mobile handset, OPK shines a light on the competition for mobile devices – in essence, saying there isn’t any. Specifically, OPK says “I don’t think that it’s the mobile device versus anything else. It’s a question about the convergence space where a lot of opportunities will arise.” Now, I’m not going to read into what OPK is saying here particularly as he’s talking in a much wider business context, but instead I’d like to use it as a base point to think about what it means from a consumer point of view.

BARCELONA, Spain – We’ve written about Nokia Research Center’s Image Space project before. It’s a photo sharing service that creates a navigable, immersive interface to images, maps, and video. Using data from a phone’s GPS, compass, and tilt-sensor, the service builds a 3D representation of the images.
What’s new is not only the ability to hear sounds and see videos, but a new 3D Point Cloud View that aggregates photos from a single object into a very cool three-dimensional model of all the images. Well, you have to see it to get it, so I’ve made a video (below) of Severi Uusitalo demonstrating this and all the other cool stuff in Nokia Image Space.

BEIJING, China – Pushing the concept of what a mobile device can truly be and how it could behave was at the core of the ‘Design My Internet Life’ competition. Held in China, the winners were revealed today at the Beijing Today Art Museum, and top mould-shattering concepts triggered exciting visions of original ‘could be’ communications devices and innovative interfaces.
