Top Nokia designer talks icons, devices, and freedom

ESPOO, Finland – We finally managed to sit down with Daniel Peterson, Head of Digital Identity from Nokia Design’s Service UI Design group. His team deals with the user interface graphics across Nokia’s software, services, and devices. The bulk of his team is split between Espoo and London and cover graphic design, motion and animation, symbols, and even the metaphors that define how symbols are understood.

Is Nokia still in the phone business?

ESPOO, Finland – Nokia reorganized recently around Internet service creation and deployment, is rolling out Internet service after Internet service, and using a lot of brain cycles of very smart people to fuse mobile services with the Internet services. Yeah, this isn’t your father’s mobile phone company anymore.

But that got me thinking. What parts of Nokia could stand on their own? I mean, is Nokia just in the phone business?

A fake Nokia Chinese fake and more on The 1100 Club and VoIP (BONUS: S60 and Ovi events, too)

ESPOO, Finland – First we had real phones available in real shops spurning real fakes. Then real phones that weren’t available, being faked. Now we have phones that aren’t even real being faked. Go figure. I found out via Unwired View that Mobile Mentalism found some pics of a Chinese phone that is based on nothing more than a Nokia patent.

Nokia Main Street

BEIJING, China – Two of us working on Conversations work remotely. We’re based at home, though frequently spend time in Starbucks, other people’s offices, on trains and myriad other places. Now, imagine being able to work like that, but without having to leave your office. That’s what it’s like for employees at the newly opened Nokia China Campus in Beijing. The centerpiece of the 70,000 sq-m campus is dubbed Nokia Main Street and offers employees a whole variety of places to work, from cafes to tea shops, meeting rooms and, rather radically, desks – fancy
that!
