GLOBAL – Recently we were lucky enough to grab a quick chat with Mark Ollila, Director of X-Media Solutions at Nokia. An intriguing job title, indeed, backed up by an exciting role. See, Mark is responsible for running a worldwide team focused on creating new cross-media services, cross-media games (including N-Gage) and evolution of current services such as Ovi Share (whilst juggling and balancing plates on his head). Certainly, no small task. We spoke to him briefly at NW09 about the hot topic of location-based gaming and he gave us a better idea of when we can expect what he calls “casual location” games to leap out of the conceptual arena and spring to life.
GLOBAL – Over the past few weeks we’ve run a series of polls asking you what the most important feature in a camera phone, web browsing device, and most recently, a music phone. This week we thought we’d dust off our thumbs and point them at mobile gaming devices.
Now, N-Gage is arguably the best gaming experience you can have on a Nokia device, with the most sophisticated service, best graphics, online connectivity, yada, yada. But what’s most important to you? And let’s not forget Java games that funnel fun into the palms of most people using mid to entry level devices.
Throw your hat in the ring and vote for what matters to you most!
BARCELONA, Spain – The N97 is the going to be the next big Ngage device, so we caught up with Jaako Kaidesoja, vice president of Ngage, to find out what we might expect when it launches. Widescreen games is the first thing, with current and future games getting the full widescreen treatment. Touch, and tilt based gaming is also on the cards. All sounds pretty exciting – full video after the jump.
BARCELONA, Spain – With the N97 changing things for Ngage through the introduction of new kinds of games and technologies, next year promises to be pretty exciting. But that isn’t all for Ngage. Jaakko Kaidesoja, VP of games gave us a little insight into what we might see from Ngage in the future. Context is king in that location is going to play a much bigger part in gaming in the future. Music too will have tighter integration and Jaakko’s team are already in the process of developing new music based initiatives. We’ll have another video with Jaakko later on, but for now here’s his view of what we can expect to see in 2009.
GLOBAL – One of the first, and most hotly anticipated games to roll out on Ngage was Creatures of the Deep. Born out of an idea producer Mike Smith had over 17 years ago, the game quickly nabbed critical and consumer acclaim.
Now the makers have sat down and produced a “making of” video, telling the Creatures story on the little screen.
GLOBAL – Yesterday AllAboutNGage.com wrote a story about what happens with your N-Gage games if you change or upgrade your device. Right now the answer is simply that you lose your games and will need to re-purchase them. This differs from the original plan where your games would form part of your N-Gage Profile, enabling you to take the games with you on whatever N-Gage-enabled device you choose.
STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Yesterday we brought you news of a fresh avenue that’s emerged to equip and encourage developers to create online community based gaming away from the N-Gage landscape. Thing is, N-Gage has to set the benchmark here for mobile gaming, but people need exposure to the possibilities and this has to penetrate the mainstream entertainment conscience in order to get gamers interacting.
SAN FRANCISCO, USA – It’s all to easy to get swept up in technical details of upcoming devices and services, and forget the important stuff, like why it matters or how it’s really going to truly add an extra sprinkling of spice to our mobile lives. With that in mind, we don’t normally get excited about software development kits (we just want the end products), but a recent announcement at the JavaOne fest in San Francisco caught our eye.
