Doing something different with our Eco Round Table

ESPOO, Finland – The folks at Nokia Singapore had a little issue. They wanted to have a round table discussion with journalists to discuss the environmental activities we have at Nokia. One problem: all the people they wanted to talk to were in Espoo. It seemed silly to make a special event and have the speakers fly down. While the event would have been good, the flights, time, and money spent would not have been proper.

We do have this amazing HALO system for really good video conferencing. And we have a HALO room in Espoo and Singapore, so it made sense to invite the journalists in Singapore to connect to the people in Espoo via HALO.* We sat in on the round table discussion and took some video of what it was like (see below). Also, there were some great things said and some choice presentations. But we’ll hold off on those because we’re possibly having another round table in the near future.

So, read on to see what it was like and to see some video of the round table event.

What’s down the Nokia Wormhole?

GLOBAL – The Nokia Wormhole doesn’t enable you to take a neat sci-fi shortcut through space and time, hopping between galaxies, as the name might loosely suggest. That is of course unless you believe that webcam technology performs this function (granted it’s not perhaps cutting edge a concept, yet it remains smart technology). See, the Nokia Wormhole (pictured) is a new remote communication initiative that Nokia has launched within the company, creating an informal long distance face-to-face meeting place (via webcam) in the same vein as Nokia’s advanced Halo suites – the purpose being that it further enables employees to communicate better yet travel less, in turn helping Nokia employees reduce the environmental impact of the company via air travel and alike.

Read on to find out more about the Nokia Wormhole.

Nokia’s new breed of workplace

The ‘workplace’ is fast evolving beyond traditional recognition, and Nokia is one of the many companies creating radical mould-breaking working environments. Is this change being born purely out of enhanced communication tools and the advent of high-speed Internet culture? Yes, in part.

It’s also clear that there’s a greater human angle to the new approach towards how we work, with core values such as freedom and good health (mental and physical) at the heart of the formula. These new-wave working environments are designed to echo the culture and ethics of a company. So therefore, increased productivity, innovation and results have to come into the equation, don’t they?

Virtually there

LINCOLNSHIRE, England – If only the signpost in our image were true. Getting anywhere in the world would be easy and happen fast. In some ways though, it is. The guy responsible for Halo at Nokia is Phil Brockbank. He’s also the man who makes sure Nokia’s Virtual Meeting Services are up to scratch and people in the company can easily get access to each other without having to jump on a plane. Interesting then that he works not in Nokia’s HQ, but from his home office in deepest Lincolnshire – 120 miles from Nokia’s UK headquarters.

Halo – what’s inside?

GLOBAL – The other day we gave our first lowdown on what it’s like to have a meeting using the new Halo telepresence system Nokia’s been rolling out internally. There’s more to Halo than meets the eye though and thanks to Product Manager Phil Brockbank (in the right hand screen), we’ve taken a look inside to see how it all happens.

Halo, you’re my hero!

LONDON/ESPOO – So today we got our first chance to play with Halo,
Nokia’s new internal “tele-presence” solution. It’s designed so people spend less
time traveling whilst still collaborating with those they should be
collaborating with. If you follow me. It’s a bit like video
conferencing. On steroids.

Teleconference, with a difference

GLOBAL – I’m pretty excited because this week we’re going to have a video conference. Now, that notion isn’t a new one. We use iChat AV all the time and it works brilliantly. What I’m excited about is Halo. It’s HP’s answer to the future of video conferencing. And, it’s Nokia’s answer to saving the planet, or at least a bit of it.
