BOSTON, USA – Change is the only constant. But there comes times where the disconnect between yesterday and tomorrow is great, and we need to stop and try to understand what is going on.
One thing we don’t do here is speculate on hard core market trends, like customer numbers, market share, or revenue. We also don’t comment (much) on competitors or try to openly discuss what we think is going down and how we’re going to respond to it.
But what we can do is read what others have written and at least point it to you. That’s the idea behind these round-ups and, even more so, the articles we bookmark on our Delicious stream (and that show up in our Twitter feed).
In today’s collection of links, I have two articles that I found interesting but which I am not so comfortable discussing (for one, I am biased). That shouldn’t stop you guys from having a discussion about these articles, though. So, let’s scroll down to see what these articles were about.
Austin, USA – South by Southwest Interactive is one of three parts to the SXSW 09 conference (the other two being Music and Film). It attracts an interesting mix of designers, web developers, performers, artists, and just an all-round compelling crowd of people. While many Nokia designers have attended in the past, SXSW is not the usual sort of conference Nokia would attend. But Molly Schonthal (from the same team as Nokia Conversations) made the case that the people who attend SXSW are certainly the ones who would use Nokia phones, such as the Nseries devices. She said it would be a perfect crowd for us to introduce Nokia to.
What then did Nokia end up doing and learning at SXSW 09? Was it worth it? Will we do it again? Read on to learn the answer to these questions and more.
ESPOO, Finland – OK, I’ve said over and over that we normally do not comment on or make comparisons with other companies. Mostly, it’s to be polite.
Regardless, others are doing the comparisons for us, so today I’ll share with your some articles I found that make a comparison between our products and a particular rising mobile phone manufacturer. Read on to see what was said.
GLOBAL – One thing we like to do is point out mobiles doing interesting things for good causes. I have one today from the UK, but threw in two unrelated ones that fit the spirit of this post.
PALO ALTO, USA – That was Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo’s response when asked what he thought of the iPhone’s design. Low-key, and succinct, much like the man himself. Whilst OPK was visiting the Palo Alto office, Elise Acherman from Silicon Valley’s The Mercury News caught up with him to ask him a bunch of questions.
Corporate social responsibility is an important issue for Nokia, and often one of the hardest things to work out is where the border lies between CSR and individual choice. Fitness is clearly an issue where the boundaries blur, and while there’s a sizable and growing fitness community, there are plenty of potential people who would be put off by a phone guilting him or her into jogging. But is prominent awareness of a feature really suggestion?
GLOBAL – All right then! Yes, we are keeping an eye on the iPhone. Who doesn’t? All because we don’t start a whole nasty fight à la Coke-Pepsi (or even Apple-IBM) doesn’t mean we aren’t buying iPhones and combing over them with an electron microscope (we’re not actually, but we are looking closely).
ESPOO, Finland – We, sort of, regularly scan a bunch of top news feeds related to Nokia and general mobile stuff (see ‘Sites we follow’ further down in the right column) and bookmark the more interesting items (see Our picks – eyes right!). It’s our way of showing you what things are sparking our interest and what thoughts might work their way into an article or interview.
ESPOO, Finland – Would you be surprised to know the iPhone is a talking point within Nokia? Of course you wouldn’t. Now would you be surprised to hear the S60 calculator hasn’t been touched (bar minor bug fixes) in almost eight years? But what have the two got in common?
