Nokia Fellows – innovating, but not in broad daylight

HELSINKI, Finland – Here on Conversations we’re always on the hunt for those engaging untold stories behind a product or service, the unlikely heroes pushing innovation, and ultimately stories that we hope give you a genuinely interesting glimpse under the increasingly transparent skin of Nokia. With this in mind we want to tell you about the Nokia Fellows, a collective of unsung minds within Nokia who’d normally (and now here’s the exception) go about their business untouched by limelight.

Nokia Research Center is not a Willy Wonka phone factory

GLOBAL - Nokia Research Center may conjure up visions of a kooky sprawling Willy Wonka lab for phones tucked away in an address-less wilderness, but the reality is in some ways far more engaging. Far from fantasy, with labs dotted across the globe in ten locations, including Beijing, Bangalore, Nairobi, Tampere, Helsinki, Lausanne, Cambridge UK, Cambridge USA, Hollywood and Palo Alto, the Nokia Research Center (NRC) is a huge operation that to many may feel intangible – partly because a number of the projects that are being researched are indeed secret, but mostly because the connection between NRC’s research and real-life end products has appeared pretty disconnected.

But a more tangible connection between NRC and the real world may be beginning to emerge, helped simply by the very recent launch of its newly designed and more openly engaging website. Click through for the full lowdown.

Internet of Things research center opens doors to new thinking

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – Nokia’s hunger for collaboration and gleaning ideas from the world’s brilliant minds is one of the pillars of its innovation strategy, and crucial in shaping the mobile future. The recently opened Nokia Research Centre in Lausanne, dedicated to studying the Internet of Things, continues Nokia’s ‘sharing ethos’ and is looking to recruit anyone with ideas to drive forward this major research project.

Nokia’s software springboard in place

ESPOO, Finland – Way back in January news emerged of Nokia’s plan to buy Trolltech. In mainstream terms it’s a little known organization, but despite the lack of glitz this is a smart outfit equipped with world class cross-platform development software and tools. So today’s news that the acquisition has been unconditionally approved by the European Commission marks an important milestone on Nokia’s journey towards enabling everyone to access the software and services they want on multiple platforms and devices, a vision championed in the recent evolution of Ovi.

NRC outreach calls for context aware pioneers

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – The new Nokia Research Center project in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology has yet to officially swing its doors open, yet we’ve noticed in a hidden corridor on the NRC website that it’s already begun casting its net to pull in even more talent and creative thinkers – the core focus on context aware services and the “Internet of Things”, an extremely exciting area of development that we’ve covered a many times here on Conversations.
