Video: Getting started with the Nokia N900

What extra functionality would you most like to see in the Nokia N900?

Nokia-N900-7GLOBAL – Yesterday we posted a story calling for your suggestions on what we should do with the N900 when we finally get hold of ours. The response has been overwhelming – in less than 24 hours over 80 of you have shared your ideas, leaving heaps of smart suggestions (read them all here), and they’re still flooding in. Thank you, it’s an awesome response, and please keep those ideas coming. Alongside many great suggestions of what you’d like us to do with the Nokia N900, a bunch of you offered up some pre-launch feedback on functionality that you’d like to see in the N900. We thought this would make for a great reader poll, particularly as the N900 is built on the open source Linux-based Maemo platform, meaning that the development community is often eager to latch onto the best suggestions in order to bring them to life quickly, and into our open palms.

So, here’s a list of extra functionality that a number of you have said you would like to see for the Nokia N900, but which is the most important? Leave your vote, or if you have a suggestion that isn’t listed, select ‘other’ option and scribble down your what you’d like to see. And as always please share your comments below.

Finding Maemo – the new Nokia N900

Nokia-N900-8ESPOO, Finland – The N900 has just leapt out of the depths and is primed to make a splash as Nokia’s debut Maemo device (sorry, couldn’t resist the fishy metaphor). In terms of where the N900 sits on Nokia’s newly broadened product spectrum – courtesy of this week’s introduction of the Booklet 3G – it bridges that wilderness between smartphone and compact laptop. The concept behind the N900 simply being that it enables you to experience a proper desktop-like experience in a pocket-size device.

We’ve gathered all the must-know details and snaps of Nokia’s first Linux-based Maemo handset. Click through to find out more and to see the N900 up close in our photo gallery.

How many platforms do we need?

GLOBAL – At last week’s Symbian Foundation event, Vodafone Director and SF member, Guido Arnone lamented that in the past his network had 17 platforms to deal with when tailoring its Live! services to fit on handsets. Don’t worry, it’s since been trimmed down to a manageable three but the move by the Foundation to put all the different Symbian OS – S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) – into one melting pot for a universal Symbian platform must be manna from mobile heaven for these guys.

Exploring the Linux learning curve

BERLIN, Germany – Mentioning Nokia and Linux in the same breath has been somewhat taboo recently. Especially since the merest utterance has previously led to false speculations on Nokia’s future mobile platform focus, which clearly remains Symbian, although Linux and open-source clearly have a role to play (a Linux-based system, Maemo, forms the backbone of Nokia’s N810 and N800 Internet Tablets). This is something that Nokia’s head of software, Ari Jaaksi, openly delved into at the Handsets World event in Berlin earlier this week. However, what is clear is that there are some nerve-striking challenges that need to be openly addressed.

Google Android is not for us. Yet.

USA – According to Niklas Savander, executive vice president of services and software at Nokia, Google Android isn’t yet ready for Nokia to make an assessment on. “A platform has three to four million lines of code” Savander told SFGate.com. “When Android has that many lines, we’ll make an assessment. Until then it’s just an announcement”.
