LONDON, England - We went out for a walk on Saturday and just after we stumbled into the local woods, I spotted a phone on the ground. It was old, a budget model, and blended in quite well with the gravel. But, a closer look reveled that it was actually on. Someone had dropped it. I’d never found a mobile phone before, so I was kinda excited!

ESPOO, Finland – Wow. There seems to be a lot going on in the tech world, from gigantic steampunk spiders to thumbs-down for gimmicky ad campaigns to tech dirt being slung around in all directions.

GLOBAL and LOCAL – OneWebDay is a sort of Earth Day for the Web. It’s a celebration of the internet, a time to reflect on how the internet has transformed our lives, and to encourage people to be responsible for the internet. This year will be the third OneWebDay and I’ve been asked to be an ambassador, getting the word out and introducing people to the celebration. As part of this, I have been asked to contribute a story to show up on the main OneWebDay pages.
Read on for our take on what the internet means to us.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Earlier today we brought you word on the entire new stable of free Ramadan-related mobile software that has just been released and made accessible via nokia.com/ramadan. Created and championed by the Nokia team in Dubai, this morning I chatted to Mohamed El-Sheakh, Business Manager of software and services for Nokia Middle East and Africa, who sent us a great little video they shot outlining the vision for the services and highlighting a couple of the key apps in action.

HELSINKI, Finland – Yesterday, we came across Jeppe, a mobile mini home video conferencing prototype robot. The latest concept to emerge from the minds working inside the Nokia Research Center’s Smart Spaces laboratory, since posting our story the team has uploaded a video of the little critter in action. Watch it here…

INTERNATIONAL – Yesterday’s release of Nokia’s recycling survey results has struck a collective eco nerve across the web. Yes, the results of the survey weren’t by any means pretty, but there’s no hiding from the fact that these are the cold hard facts and that it’s this reality that is sparking awareness, which has got to be a great thing. Especially, considering the results showed that almost half of us don’t even know we can recycle mobile phones, with most of those that do not knowing how.

INDIA – Hot on the heels of Nokia CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, speaking about India as a hub for innovation, comes word of how rural areas of India and farmers in particular may benefit from the country’s accelerated mobile evolution.

INDIA – This morning I came across an interesting (though eye-cripplingly long) interview with Nokia CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, by the Indian bureau of The Economic Times. As emerging markets go, India is a 24-carat golden child – a hotbed of diverse mobile developments and innovation, Nokia has been at the heart of this rapid evolution. Sifting through this interview, Kallasvuo is clearly excited by what’s happening in India and highlights how bright the future is looking in terms of innovation.

GLOBAL – You’ve seen some of his research, you’ve heard a bit about how we works and what he does. Now though you can find out everything you’d ever want to know (almost) about Nokia’s Jan Chipcase. His work takes him around the world observing and understanding how mobile design fits into and affects lives, societies and cultures. But don’t call him an anthropologist; because he’s not fully qualified he
much prefers ‘design research’ to describe his job.

ESPOO, Finland - I saved a few links for today since most had an aspect of the future of how the digital and physical collide. We seem to be so focused on devices still, much like, I presume, cavemen (cave people?) probably sat around the fire discussing round and round flint techniques and flint celebrities. But, I’m more of a scholar rather than a gadget maven and like to pull back and ask what it all means to our future as humans.
