Nokia Beta Labs spring cleaned and psyched about Ovi Store

GLOBAL – There’s been a bunch of activity over at Nokia Beta Labs this week, with a couple of fresh app updates and some significant stuff being laid to rest. But it’s all good, and this particular Beta Labs spring clean marks a milestone moment as we begin to spy swarms of exciting apps buzzing over the horizon with the imminent arrival of Nokia’s upcoming Ovi Store.

Understanding where Ovi Store is coming from

GLOBAL – Mosh is closing. Although this is news to some, it was actually announced back at Mobile World Congress, though in a less obvious form. This from the official press release at Mobile World Congress “The Ovi Store will consolidate the best experiences from the current content services including Download!, MOSH and WidSets to a single channel”. Mosh has been around for a couple of years now and by all accounts has been pretty successful. It was pretty revolutionary when it launched (still is, I reckon) in enabling users to create and share all sorts of content (it’s the all sorts, which seems to be exciting some people). The decision to take the best of Mosh, along with the best of Download! and WidSets and merge it all into one place is a solid one. Why maintain three or four services when you can get one to do the whole lot better.

News, sport and the weather

GLOBAL – Messing around at the weekend on the Nokia mobile site (okay, I was bored) I stumbled across what I thought was a great little app. Pocket Express packs a ton of useful info into a neat little app, offers a free version and upgrades for those who want more. When I mentioned it to Charlie though, and once he’d had a look, his instant response was simply “why is it always news, sport and the weather?”
