Nokia Magnifier update and the question of digitizing traditional household tools

GLOBAL – This morning the team over at Nokia Beta Labs released a new version of the Nokia Magnifier app. A sharper, smoother-running update, this latest beta release of Nokia Magnifier better exploits the auto-focus camera feature on many S60 devices such as the N96, N95, N95 8GB, N82, N73, E90, E71, E66, to enable you to easily enlarge hard-copy small print.

Harnessing the often underplayed features of a device is crucial for driving innovation – an ethos that has been wonderfully embraced by many mobile innovators over the past year. So with traditional household tools such as the magnifying glass and spirit level (click to see it working on N95) becoming available on devices, how far can this go?

Okay, so you can’t digitize a screwdriver, weighing scales or a rolling pin… or could you, with say the Morph concept in mind? Perhaps that is stretching things too far. Maybe you disagree. So, how far can or should this breed of digitized traditional tool be taken. Is there a point where what’s practical and useful steps into the realm of the ridiculous?

Read on for more and to watch videos of Nokia Magnifier and the spirit level on N95. Plus, get stuck in and leave your opinions.

Nokia N96 and Bruce Lee

CHINA – When Nokia China wanted to launch the N96 it went for none other than Bruce Lee. The kicker for this is a YouTube video viral of Bruce Lee battling two opponents at the table tennis table, and winning! Released late last year, isn’t the kind of battle we might normally associate with Bruce Lee, it is an actual game of table tennis, but that doesn’t make it any less fascinating. Check it out after the jump.

Top debates on Nokia Conversations in 2008

ESPOO, Finland – We were looking back at the activity across our streams. Comments, views, hits, and stuff all pretty much point to the same top stories that generated the most debate and comments (listed below). I want to point out that we are rapidly approaching that tipping point where the great comments are starting to overwhelm us. That’s the bad side of abundance and we are working hard to keep this whole endeavor interactive in the coming year (with the occasional moments of bankruptcy permitted when things get really hairy).

I also want to use this moment to thank all of you for making this site what it truly is meant to be, a place for us to all talk about stories from around the Nokia neighborhood. Without all of you, we would be just a bunch of hot air.

Now to the top debates of the year!

ESPOO, Finland – Nokia recently removed the Nokia SIP client (for VoIP) from a few of our devices. Many folk have had a lot to say (and are still saying it). And now there might be a solution.

Read on for more details in this story.

Where’s that N96 (aka Ralph the Hawtness) now?

PERTH, Australia – As you can tell from our home page, the Nokia N96 World Tour has landed in Perth, Australia. I don’t know about you, but I am jealous. Really wish I could be there with it, in the antipodean spring, as a wet winter approaches me in Finland.

Video: Mikko Kuusisto and phone updates over the air

ESPOO, Finland – I found out that the N96, the N79, and the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic all have something interesting that I have been expecting for a long time: phone software updates over the air.

What does that mean?
