GLOBAL – A few weeks back I wondered what would happen if a phone went hand to hand, streaming wherever it was, slowly accumulating a story of its own travel. Part of this was inspired by The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (of which I’ve watched a trailer) and Flat Stanley (which my children both participated in). But, also, part of this was wanting to tie together a bunch of interesting people I have met and known, over the past few years, with something fun.
Next thing that happened is that I wondered aloud to one of my colleagues, Ben Lampe, and he took the idea and ran with it, goading me to work with him to make this so (so, many thanks to him).
So now we have the Nokia N96 World Tour. Read on to learn about what we’ve done.
LONDON, England - I have on my desk three boxes. One contained the N96 currently residing in my pocket, the other contains the 5310 I’ll start playing with when Comes With Music launches on Thursday and the third is the N85 I’ve got to play with Nokia viNe. Why does all that matter? Well, it’s all to do with the boxes, actually. See, the difference in size, between the N96 and the N85 is huge. Or at least, the N96 box is huge, whilst the N85 isn’t.
LONDON, England – I’ve spent the last few days playing with the N96 and drawn like a midget to a lightbulb to its BBC iPlayer application. The N96 comes packing a DVB-H tuner, which means it can receive TV signals, which in turn enables it to play terrestrial TV. So far so good. Except in the UK there isn’t an form of mobile TV service right now. The UK Nokia team is doing its bit with Capsule N96 – the home-grown TV station designed specifically for the N96, but the real gap-filler has to be iPlayer.
GLOBAL – Over the past month we’ve witnessed the usual array of firmware and software updates across Nokia devices and services, including a recent firmware freshen-up for N96, a new version of N-Gage and the beta release of Communication Center 2.0 yesterday.
ESPOO, Finland – It’s come to my attention that there are some folks grumbling about the size of the battery on the Nokia N96, which is smaller than the battery on the Nokia N95-8GB.
UK – The elusive beast that is mobile television has yet to tightly wrap its tentacles around the globe, however on-the-go telly is clearly still on the menu looking ahead.
GLOBAL – Floods of Nokia N96 handsets have begun their exodus from factory to shop floor, with shipping beginning today. Hardly in need of introduction, the newest Nseries unquestionably out-muscles the N95 8GB in face-off features stakes – it comes loaded with 16GB of storage coupled with optional microSD card slot that’ll suck up to 24GB of extra memory, supports live TV (if you’re region supports DVB-H), and my personal favourite… the kickstand!
ESPOO, Finland – Today I’d like to take the opportunity to point out an article by a respected journalist that was well written and balanced (like always), but also a bit off.
