GLOBAL – This time last year we ran a piece about how excited we were to see such diversity breeding on the mobile software scene, punctuated with the emergence of the suite of Ramadan related services for Nokia devices. This year, the Holy Month of Ramadan is again being supported via a package of pocket apps, with the addition of more devices, including the Nokia N97, plus each of the apps is now available through the Ovi Store and nokia.com/ramadan.

GLOBAL – In a little over six months over one million users have signed up for an Ovi Mail account. With the top five countries including India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia and South Africa its clear the idea of on-device email set up and use is proving to be hugely popular in developing countries. This is a great milestone for the team behind Ovi Mail and evidence that the service launch is timely and fulfilling a definite need. Only 25 per cent of the global population are on email right now – Ovi Mail is designed for the other 75 per cent. Ovi Mail users need never touch a PC yet can be completely connected to the online world through their mobile device.

GLOBAL – This week sees the roll out of an S60 5th edition of the mobile YouTube app. I’ve used this app on my E71 previously and it’s a great way of dipping into the curious world of YouTube video (BTW, have you seen our recent efforts?). Rolling it out on the 5800 XpressMusic and N97 is a boon for owners of those devices. I’ve just installed the app on my N97 and it works a treat, is brilliantly quick (over WiFi) and swiping through videos works great.

GLOBAL – Back in the day, Nseries devices were often referred to as multimedia computers. Of course now they’re known as mobile computers, and given the likes of the Nokia N97, that’s a very fitting description. It’s fitting too, that multimedia plays a central role in the Nseries blog, the latest Nokia blog to have the Conversations spotlight shone on it. With a video on pretty much every post, the site manages to bring Nseries devices to life in a way words simply can’t, something I think adds a huge appeal to the site.

GLOBAL – Fancy getting your hands on an N97 for free, nowt, nada? Thought so. Online as it happens is a new Nokia campaign site designed to raise awareness of the Internet as it happens and how widgets can help bring it to life on your device. With more than 200,000,000 websites on the Internet now, it’s getting harder to find and access the information you want. Widgets can help, particularly on your mobile.
More a bit of fun than a serious widget creating device, the effects can be quite funny, as you’ll see from our own creation at the end of the story. Taking part is easy, it only takes a few minutes to create something quite cool and when you’re done you can share it with friends, or add it to your blog. What’s more, the winning widgets will be turned into mobile widgets and made available through Ovi Store.
