Sorting through 1100 rumors a day

ESPOO, Finland – Rumors are a normal part of life. Someone hears something or thinks they heard something and, next thing you know, it’s repeated everywhere as fact.

For the most part, here at Nokia, we follow those rumors, but let most of them be. Of the ones that have any staying power, or that have the potential to snowball into something more serious, we look at these more closely and weigh action. In the end, there are a few we feel can be clarified and put to rest with a simple statement.

Below, I have listed four rumors we have read or heard in the past few weeks that could use a sentence of two to shoo them away. Read on the learn more.

Top debates on Nokia Conversations in 2008

ESPOO, Finland – We were looking back at the activity across our streams. Comments, views, hits, and stuff all pretty much point to the same top stories that generated the most debate and comments (listed below). I want to point out that we are rapidly approaching that tipping point where the great comments are starting to overwhelm us. That’s the bad side of abundance and we are working hard to keep this whole endeavor interactive in the coming year (with the occasional moments of bankruptcy permitted when things get really hairy).

I also want to use this moment to thank all of you for making this site what it truly is meant to be, a place for us to all talk about stories from around the Nokia neighborhood. Without all of you, we would be just a bunch of hot air.

Announcing The 1100 Club (aka ‘Ditch your smartphone. Go dumb!’)

LONDON, UK – Do we really need smartphones? Indeed, why are they called smartphones? Are all other phones dumb?

I’ve been using cutting-edge Internet-connected mobile devices for around ten years and over time pushed the envelope so far, it’s even got ripped in a few places. Lately I’ve come to see that, in the end, it’s connecting to people (where have I heard that line?) that matters most to me and, for the most part, voice and text seem to do the trick.

Therefore, I hereby announce the formation of The 1100 Club (not to be confused with The 1100 Club).
