GLOBAL – We have the benefit of sitting right in the middle of Nokia’s communications department. And, no joke, it’s a really communicative department, such that we get a good heads up on a lot of announcements, or what are the hot topics of the moment, or if there are any tidbits that you folks would find interesting.
Today is no different. Through the departmental grapevine, I heard some news about the sales of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic in the first quarter of this year. And, as you all know, wekeeppushing the 5800, since we were predicting it would be big.
And we were right. Not to tease you anymore, this is what I found out.
SAN FRANCISCO, USA – Last week Conversations editor Charlie Schick was out at Web 2.0 expo 2009 in San Francisco, shooting clips of some of the coolest stuff from the show floor. One of the lesser-seen slivers of software was a smart Associated Press (AP) touchscreen news app, slated to launch in May to coincide with the opening of the Ovi Store, primed for use on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and then the Nokia N97 in June.
We witnessed the tactile Associated Press news app in action, demoed by Kate Butler from the AP. It features a slick interface for engaging with the latest news and photos – you can even caption their images with comments or share pics. Click through to watch a video of it in action on the N97. GLOBAL – The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is arguably an unlikely candidate for such a bold question, especially when mentioned in the same breath as milestone mobiles of the past few years including the N95 and E71. But could Nokia’s first touchscreen caller actually be the best handset Nokia has ever released?
Read on to examine the evidence (and gut feelings), and to lay down your opinions. Continue reading>>

ESPOO, Finland – It’s been a funny week of chips, cows, and fish being mixed in with mobile phones. I do not know what’s going on, but the interest in those stories suggests that maybe we need to dig up more of them (don’t forget to vote in our fish vs cow poll, though).
Right. Back to reality.
In this past week or two I found a few articles evaluating actions Nokia has taken (or not), a review of battery life on smartphones, a review on the Nokia N86 8MP, and a gag application for the Nokia 5800. I also have a comment on recent issues with the Nokia 5800.
