One year of Nokia Conversations

ESPOO, Finland – Wow. Today is our first anniversary (we went public on 21 April 2008*) and it’s amazing what we’ve accomplished in one year. When we set off on this adventure, we sort of had our own ideas on how it would be received, what challenges we would face, and where we would be at this stage. But, we really came to this with open minds and few expectations, keeping us ready to grow and respond to conditions as needed.

As with many milestones, we’d like to pause and take stock of some of our highlights (and “lowlights”) and even think a bit about the coming year. Please read on and see if you remember the year the same way we do.

Nokia at SXSW 09 – Nokia Doctor on call

Austin, US – One of the things Nokia did at South by Southwest Interactive (SXSW 09) last week was bring Dustin Randall, from Nokia Care, to play doctor and help folk repair or troubleshoot anything that might be going on with their Nokia phone. Dustin has been helping Molly Schonthal (from the Nokia Social Media Communications team) manage and maintain all the devices she’s been sharing with key people, such as bloggers, videographers, and designers.

Dustin hammed it up with a full white coat and all. But we also managed to get a peek into his box of magical tricks. If you always wondered what were the implements of wizardry that the Nokia Care folks used in flashing phones and such, check out this video (after the break).

Awards, legends, and silence – a look around the neighborhood

ESPOO, Finland – Now that the year-end holidays are over, we here at Nokia Conversations are back in full force. We have a thing or two cooking in the kitchen, and we’re thinking of our plans for the year. More of that as it develops.

Right now, I’d like to empty out some open tabs in my browser. I can’t say I caught everything since the last time we shared links. And I’m a bit silent on other things as I mull how best I can usefully add to the conversations. But, this is a nice set to start the year with.

To the list!

Great news from Nokia Care USA (+BONUS)

USA – As you all know, we’ve been having a conversation about the state of service by Nokia in the USA. The thread started with a passionate but disappointed N95 (ex-)owner. We’ve been digging deeper, trying to get some answers, but more importantly, trying to explore how the situation can be improved.

N-Gage update – it’s good news!

ESPOO, Finland – We’ve dug in deeper and we’ve been told a fix is in the works for the recent N-Gage games transfer situation. This is excellent news and although initially it looks like it may need to be serviced through Nokia Care (as an interim solution), there is a longer-term fix in the works.

Where do we go from here 2

USA – Following our posts last week on Service in the USA, we’ve had an excellent response. We know we don’t have all the answers, and appreciate the fact that those commenting have the patience to give us the time to get them. It’s important at this point to say we’re going to continue this conversation until we do get them. Right now though, I just want to put a line in and outline the key questions still outstanding. Amy Gahran, who’s driven this conversation from the users’ perspective has done an excellent job of rounding up the key issues in her latest post on Contentious.com, which i’ve now summarised.

When things go wrong with updating your device software

It’s not fun if a device you cherish stops working after a software update. Unfortunately, this is exactly what happened to Amy Gahran.
