Bite-size comic books and small-screen mobile publishing

N97-Atomic-DreamsGLOBAL – We remain fascinated observers of writers and artists beginning to truly explore the medium of mobile publishing. And the recent addition of the first comic book to be exclusively released freely via the Ovi Store (Atomic Dreams issue one – pictured) has served to punctuate interest in this area of lesser-trodden ground. It’s fair to say that some people are exploring the medium head-first, as is the case with Carnival Comics, the publishers of the new Atomic Dreams series, alongside arguably one of the boldest and most innovative attempts so far to capture the multimedia possibilities of mobile publishing as realized by the Manga Man mobile universe, as created by the charming and acclaimed sci-fi writer Alex Besher (read the full story).

Retro fascination

Rotary-DialerGLOBAL – Dip a hand into Ovi Store’s pocket and you’d be surprised what old treasures you might find. Rotary Dialer is an app that turns your touchscreen device into a traditional (old school) rotary dialer telephone, allowing you to dial numbers like you did in the good old days (assuming you were born before 1985, that is). Awe-v or oh-v-ee?

OviGLOBAL – Ever since it was first announced I’ve had something of a curious fascination with the way the word Ovi is pronounced. I’m sure I’m not alone, either. Mike did a video of it last year, interviewing a bunch of folks and asking them to pronounce Ovi (well, me and his family). There seems to be a consensus there that it’s drawn out, rather than a harsh drop. So, more “oh-v-ee” than “awe-v”.

Ovi Store App: An open screen on CNN

BOSTON, USA – Nokia and Adobe announced this past February a $10M fund for developers of Flash applications for mobiles, called the Open Screen Project. We spoke recently with Kirk Ballou from Flash Widgets, a small company that makes Flash-based widgets for mobile devices. Flash Widgets is among the first to be awarded a grant from the Nokia-Adobe Open Screen fund.

We asked Kirk a bit about his company, developing with Flash for mobiles, and how they got involved with Nokia and Adobe. He also told me a bit about his two Open Screen Fund apps, one a CNN news reader, the other a Twitter app for mobiles.
