Best of 2008 in Products – The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

ESPOO, Finland – The Nokia 5800 had at least two interesting things going for it this year, 1) it was leaked long before launch (when it was known as “Tube”), and 2) it was Nokia’s latest touchscreen device and there were some expectations that it would go head-to-head with the Apple iPhone.

Despite this, the Nokia 5800 hit the world on its own terms. It was clear to the public that it was not going head-to-head with the iPhone. The 5800 came in at a different price point, different set of features, and targeted at a different segment. Yup, the touch-screen commonality was not enough to lump the whole 5800 into the same iPhone niche.

Dumping the dirt on you

ESPOO, Finland - James and Mike have been slogging away, making sure great stories still came through while I cavorted with web-heads at Le Web 08 last week. But, I do know that you folks like it when I point to things that interest us, so I’m back with a few things for you to read.

Living the life of a mobile phone

ESPOO, FinlandMy article on the bangs and bumps of a mobile phone got a few comments and posts. AdamF, of course has the best story, though it is a friend of a friend kind:

I asked the man when did he notice these problems, and he replied, “Well… It was after I removed it from a cow”

Niche vs Mass-Market: What Nokia is up against.

ESPOO, Finland – I was at a great seminar the other day by one of our executives who has long been in the phone business. He had a great story in response to the usual questions of ‘when is Nokia coming out with <insert latest tech craze here>?’.

Phones get a beating. Yup. What’s your story?

ESPOO, Finland – I switch phones frequently. But it’s not because I get a new shiny-shiny every six months. Most of the time it’s because I am brutal with my phones. Dings, cracks, scratches, broken tines, and so on, accelerate the day I need to pass on to a new device.

Wooden it be nice?

GLOBAL – Regular readers will only be too aware that we don’t comment on upcoming launches here on Conversations. Which is why we’re perfectly able to comment on this wooden handset, currently gathering news steam on the world’s tech blogs. Pretty much every site worth its salt has run a story on this over the last few days and there’s hot speculation, and anticipation on where it comes from (with the hottest rumours being something knocked up by a couple of Nokia’s designers).

Is the phone the freedom tool of the 21st century?

ESPOO, Finland – In the course of our interview with Daniel Peterson from Nokia Design, he made a comparison between cars in the 20th century with phones in the 21st century.

Daniel spent many years as a Vehicle Industrial Designer in the auto industry. And he’s been comparing those years with what he’s been learning about mobiles since joining Nokia about a year ago. He has a strong sense of responsibility for the people he designs for. He feels that the design decisions he makes affects many people and he believes Design is a way to make things more human and more beneficial to humanity.

He also wonders whether the phone can supplant the car as a tool for freedom.

Caller ID withheld

LONDON, England - This might just be me, but more often than not, I’m
finding people withholding their caller ID. My brother was the first to
do it, and it was really annoying as more often than not (given the
time he’d call me, and the fact I’d just ignored his message on my
landline) I’d have a good idea it was him, I couldn’t answer with
anything other than a quizzical hello.

It’s not a phone, it’s a tool!

USA – At least that’s how Matthew Miller from ZDNet sees his mobile. Matt scribed an excellent post recently in response to some of the articles on Nokia Conversations and quite rightly points out the good bits and the bad bits for consumers in the US.
