Nokia N900 designed to get better the more you use it

N900-keyboardGLOBAL – The honeymoon period you experience when you first get hold of a new device can often be filled with mini epiphanies and moments of adventurer’s delight (or in few cases, knuckle-biting despair), and in the case of the Nokia N900 the former is most certainly proving to be the case. It would seem I’m currently caught on a journey similar to that of Matthew Miller from NokiaExperts.com, who quite simply reports “the more I play with the device the more impressed I get”. I concur. Now, there’s a lovely logic about this, as one of the main things that’s most exciting about the upcoming N900 is the community aspect and vast scope of possibilities that an open source Maemo platform offers, both in terms of rapid distribution of innovative developments and the noble eagerness associated with sharing fresh treasures of information to help your fellow peer. It’s fair to say the N900 is designed to get better the more you use it.

With that in mind, Matthew recently highlighted a number of smart keyboard tips and lesser-known tricks, brought to our attention via the ever-quick-to-share Guru at Maemo-Guru.com, even prior to its launch. A great sign of things to come no doubt. So in the spirit of this fledgling community, read on to find out more about the N900’s QWERTY keyboard shortcuts, and to share your thoughts on what it might mean to how you might behave with the N900.

Video poll – What’s your perfect mobile input interface? QWERTY, touchscreen, voice command…?

GLOBAL – Some thought the proliferation of touchscreen phones, such as the Nokia 5800, would mark the demise of the trusty key-push QWERTY keypad. Nothing could be further from the truth, with QWERTY input interfaces proving extremely relevant both on the starch-shirted end of the spectrum with the Nokia E71 and the low-slung-jeaned scene with the keenly awaited Nokia 5730 XpressMusic.

Of course your ideal method of communicating with your device entirely depends on what you need to achieve, but whether you’re purely a texter, or an all-calling, all-surfing, all app-downloading sort of user, we want to know what your ideal set-up is.

We’ve even spiced things up a bit on the poll front by adding in some video examples. Click through and click now to ensure your vote is counted.

Stoking the interface innovation fire

GLOBAL – Surely invisible interfaces that rely on our instincts, rather than pre-meditated physical interactions, are the holy grail when it comes to engaging with devices. Wouldn’t you agree? Okay, so we’re some way off that at the moment, although many would argue that we’re so well practiced at texting, inputing info and navigating menus that it’s second nature. But that’s the easy answer, and not the innovation-hungry attitude that’s required to push us to the next level when it comes to behaving unconsciously with mobile technology. Pushing this angle Nuance Communications has been announced as a company that will be working alongside Nokia on next generation predictive text and mobile interface solutions.
