Ovi Store App: An open screen on CNN

BOSTON, USA – Nokia and Adobe announced this past February a $10M fund for developers of Flash applications for mobiles, called the Open Screen Project. We spoke recently with Kirk Ballou from Flash Widgets, a small company that makes Flash-based widgets for mobile devices. Flash Widgets is among the first to be awarded a grant from the Nokia-Adobe Open Screen fund.

We asked Kirk a bit about his company, developing with Flash for mobiles, and how they got involved with Nokia and Adobe. He also told me a bit about his two Open Screen Fund apps, one a CNN news reader, the other a Twitter app for mobiles.

New apps and new tips (BONUS: Old gripes)

smartdogBOSTON, USA – A scan of the web keeps not only revealing new apps coming to Ovi Store (Shazam is one of the more recent biggies), but that whole new markets are showing up. Inside I have three sets of apps recently added to the Ovi Store that suggest that a nice range of choices is starting to evolve and emerge out of the pool.

I’ll then wrap up this post with a new Nokia tips and tricks site and a bonus – gripes.

On jumping the gap

BOSTON, USA – Just yesterday I wrote about how you sometimes never know what folks will develop, or not develop, for a device. True, one commentor split hairs over what might be core or not core. But, the point is, when a device goes out, it might never end up in the hands of the user in the same way the product manager imagined a pristine device would.

Read on as I show examples of this and elaborate a bit further on this thread.

Nokia developer summit video round up part 2

MONACO, Monte Carlo – Continuing yesterday’s collection of videos from the inaugural Nokia Developer Summit, held last week in Monaco, where James Etheridge got to speak to some interesting industry folks involved in creating the software we all use. Forum Nokia has been increasing its role in software development over the past couple of years and Pekka Pohjakallio talks about what it means to developers, and why publishing software to Ovi Store is a good thing for all involved. He highlights having access to 50 million devices from launch, as being a pretty powerful incentive for developers to get involved.

James also caught up with Benoit Schillings and Thiago Macieira from Qt (pronounced ‘cute’) software about the platform that enables developers to create applications for multiple operating systems, without having to redevelop the software each time. We have the first video with these two today, but we’ll be back Monday with the second as these guys have some interesting stuff to reveal.

Finally, we have David Rivas VP Nokia who looks after software at Nokia. He reveals some interesting stuff, including Nokia’s background in software, why it’s important, what’s happening with Symbian and most interestingly his prediction that Symbian will soon support multiple processors. Enjoy the show(s) after the jump!

Videos – More on the Ovi Store and Publish to Ovi

San Francisco, USA – Folks have been asking me to get a video explaining what the Ovi Store looks like and what the publishing process is like.

I’ve done a bit more. I’ve made a video of what the Ovi Store look like on a Nokia N85. I also spoke with Bill Perry, part of the Forum Nokia services team, who told me a bit about the publishing process, on how to get apps onto Ovi Store. Also at the Nokia booths at Web 2.0 Expo, there were a few developers who are making stuff that will be distributed through the store starting in May 2009. So, I made a video of one of them.

So, enough prattling by me, click through to see the three videos below. Continue reading>>
