LONDON, England - Earlier today we caught up with Lee Williams, who heads up S60. Given the scale of the news about Symbian (we’re still in shock, but in a good way) it was a brilliant opportunity for us to get some insight from one of those most deeply involved. GLOBAL – Nokia today announced the creation of the Symbian Foundation, but what is it exactly, and what does it mean for the rest of us? The Foundation has the backing of key industry players including Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Samsung, networks including DOCOMO and Vodafone and chip makers ST Microelectronics and Texas Instruments. By making the Symbian Platform fully open source, it means anyone can develop for it, there’ll be a single, unified operating system for mobile phones and rapid innovation of services and software.

GLOBAL – Nokia today announced a plan to acquire the 52 per cent of Symbian it doesn’t already own and set up the Symbian Foundation, making the platform open source in the process. The ambition is to create “the most attractive platform for mobile innovation and drive the development of new and compelling web-enabled applications” Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo.

USA – According to Niklas Savander, executive vice president of services and software at Nokia, Google Android isn’t yet ready for Nokia to make an assessment on. “A platform has three to four million lines of code” Savander told SFGate.com. “When Android has that many lines, we’ll make an assessment.
