Comment of the week… selected with help from Socrates

SocratesGLOBAL – Yesterday morning Phil posted a piece on sites that look fantastic on Nokia touch devices, immediately sparking a stream of smart comments.

That piece and this week’s winning comment do something that is often sidelined in favour of many of us lingering on our irrepressible appetite for what’s next (guilty as charged) – both refreshingly stop to enjoy the now, in this case web browsing on Nokia touch devices such as the N97. So it’s funny that earlier today on my morning Stumbleupon stroll that I read a quote on refspace from Socrates that clearly led me to gravitate towards Phil’s story and the winning comment associated with it. Socrates once said, “He who is not contented with what he has, would not be contented with what he would like to have.”

That comment certainly would’ve earned a copy of the Twitter app, Gravity. Wonder if Socrates would’ve been a Nokia sort of guy? :) Perhaps less profound, but still in the spirit of Socrates, read on to find out who has won this week’s best comment award and a copy of Gravity.

Poll results: Touchscreen & QWERTY combo voted your perfect set-up

GLOBAL – The resurgence of QWERTY interfaces in tandem with touchscreen trends sparked us to ask you the question, “What’s your perfect mobile input interface?”. We kick-started this poll at the beginning of the week (it’s still open, so if you haven’t already, vote now!) and already hundreds of you have voted. Granted it’s early days but there’s one clear front-runner – the pairing of touchscreen and QWERTY, as found on the upcoming Nokia N97 (watch making of the N97 video).

Which mobile input method do you think is sitting in second place? Read on to discover where dedicated touchscreens, QWERTY keyboards, numeric keypads and other input methods rank at the moment.

Video poll – What’s your perfect mobile input interface? QWERTY, touchscreen, voice command…?

GLOBAL – Some thought the proliferation of touchscreen phones, such as the Nokia 5800, would mark the demise of the trusty key-push QWERTY keypad. Nothing could be further from the truth, with QWERTY input interfaces proving extremely relevant both on the starch-shirted end of the spectrum with the Nokia E71 and the low-slung-jeaned scene with the keenly awaited Nokia 5730 XpressMusic.

Of course your ideal method of communicating with your device entirely depends on what you need to achieve, but whether you’re purely a texter, or an all-calling, all-surfing, all app-downloading sort of user, we want to know what your ideal set-up is.

We’ve even spiced things up a bit on the poll front by adding in some video examples. Click through and click now to ensure your vote is counted.

Stoking the interface innovation fire

GLOBAL – Surely invisible interfaces that rely on our instincts, rather than pre-meditated physical interactions, are the holy grail when it comes to engaging with devices. Wouldn’t you agree? Okay, so we’re some way off that at the moment, although many would argue that we’re so well practiced at texting, inputing info and navigating menus that it’s second nature. But that’s the easy answer, and not the innovation-hungry attitude that’s required to push us to the next level when it comes to behaving unconsciously with mobile technology. Pushing this angle Nuance Communications has been announced as a company that will be working alongside Nokia on next generation predictive text and mobile interface solutions.

Touchscreen will be for everyone

ESPOO, Finland – It’s no secret that Nokia’s working on touchscreen devices. Having done the N800 and N810, there are more in the works. Now, as much as we’d like to tell you when new models will be making an appearance, we genuinely don’t know – so can’t say. That said, we’ve been given a bit of a clearer picture of what might happen thanks to Anssi Vanjoki, VP of Nokia Markets.

Stretching the touchscreen concept

CAMBRIDGE, England – Researchers at the University of Cambridge Nanoscience Centre have been working with the Nokia Research Centre on a form of ’stretchable electronic skin’ which could enable a new breed of multi-plane, multi-touch interfaces and, potentially, prosthetic skin.

According to the Economist however, the potential doesn’t stop there.
