GLOBAL – A few weeks back I wondered what would happen if a phone went hand to hand, streaming wherever it was, slowly accumulating a story of its own travel. Part of this was inspired by The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (of which I’ve watched a trailer) and Flat Stanley (which my children both participated in). But, also, part of this was wanting to tie together a bunch of interesting people I have met and known, over the past few years, with something fun.
Next thing that happened is that I wondered aloud to one of my colleagues, Ben Lampe, and he took the idea and ran with it, goading me to work with him to make this so (so, many thanks to him).
So now we have the Nokia N96 World Tour. Read on to learn about what we’ve done.
LONDON, England – I got pretty excited when the London-based NFC trial kicked off a while back. Sure, I was a bit gutted not to be a triallist, but knowing a few people who were, made it interesting enough. Quick recap – Nokia, O2, Barclaycard, Visa Europe, TranSys, AEG and Transport for London got together to try out contactless payments across London.
INTERNATIONAL – This week’s most exciting development has been the launch of we:offset, a smart eco-savvy mobile app that calculates your CO2 emissions when traveling, enabling you to offset them on the move.
Read on for the highlights…
INTERNATIONAL – Yesterday I was keen to shine the spotlight on Nokia’s new location-based CO2 offsetting software. Simply called we:offset its the first mobile app to calculate your carbon footprint when you travel by aeroplane, and even do it automatically using location-based info. So I thought I’d shoot a short video of it in action. Watch it here…
ESPOO, Finland – In a few moments I will have started my official vacation. While I am not a gadget freak, there are some things I know I will be doing that are enhanced by tech (see more below).
ESPOO, Finland – My travel patterns have drastically changed. Just look at the graphic on the right which shows my carbon profile, calculated by Dopplr. Part of the change is due to a new job I took in January (this one). One of the aspects of this job that appealed to me was indeed a potential reduction in, and more control over, my travel.
