LONDON, England – I feel somewhat like a werewolf trapped outdoors on a full moon, only the transformation I’m currently undergoing is fully consensual and I’m not howling.
Back in December I posed the question “N97. Will it change me?” sparking a heap of comments and debate from many of you on the topic of anticipation versus reality when it comes to new devices, and how we often think and hope that our mobile behavior might alter (for the better) with a new product. And how it often does change our behavior, but not necessarily how we think it might. Especially a flagship product of the stature and near unparalleled expectancy of the N97.
I was lucky enough to get hold of an early N97 last Friday, and in less than 72 hours my new device has indeed triggered a rapid metamorphosis in my mobile behavior. One I may not (and hope not) to recover from.
ESPOO, Finland – Every so often it’s good to put out a wee administrative message about who we are, what our goals are, and how to follow us. And, yes, this is one of them, about some ways to follow what we produce here at Nokia Conversations.
As you should be aware by now, we have a few different streams you can follow. We have video, presentations, bookmarks, and, of course, this site. We’re doing our best to fill the streams and interact with everyone who participates in those streams.
Below, I’ve listed some of the newer streams, particularly highlighting some we haven’t properly promoted yet. So, read on and see if you’ve missed any.
GLOBAL – Late last week we launched a poll to find out which S60 Twitter app put the biggest smile on your beak, and the response has been great, with Gravity currently storming ahead of the pack in the popularity race. We’re going to keep the poll open for a few more weeks as this topic on the ultimate Twitter app for S60 Nokia phones seems to have struck a serious chord – we’ve already clocked up over 300 votes in 6 days, and heaps of you have been commenting with some great suggestions for alternatives to our core list of S60 Twitter apps.
Read on for a full rundown of how all the Twitter apps are measuring up alongside each other in the most-loved stakes, plus find out which Twitter apps many of you have mentioned that weren’t included in our original list of big hitter Twitter apps for your Nokia.
GLOBAL – The S60 Twitter app on everyones lips (or rather beaks) at the moment is the quite brilliant Gravity. It’s interface is extremely clear, and it’s tough not to get suckered in by its velvet-smooth transitions and ease of use. That said it’s a paid-for S60 Twitter app and one of the pricier ones. But with this week’s emergence of the smart new Twittix S60 app (pictured), which is the highest flier of all S60 Twitter apps? Is Twibble the wind beneath your tweeting wings (it has recently been updated with new features)? Or Stew for the Nokia 5800 or Dabr? Is there some other S60 Twitter app we haven’t heard about that deserves shouting about? Let us know your favourite in our new S60 Twitter app poll below.
What’s you’re favourite Twitter app? We’ve listed the most prominent S60 Twitter apps and put them in alphabetical order, so take your pick and click.
ESPOO, Finland – Wow. Today is our first anniversary (we went public on 21 April 2008*) and it’s amazing what we’ve accomplished in one year. When we set off on this adventure, we sort of had our own ideas on how it would be received, what challenges we would face, and where we would be at this stage. But, we really came to this with open minds and few expectations, keeping us ready to grow and respond to conditions as needed.
As with many milestones, we’d like to pause and take stock of some of our highlights (and “lowlights”) and even think a bit about the coming year. Please read on and see if you remember the year the same way we do.
HELSINKI, Finland – I’m not shy of the fact that I spend a lot of time on my Nokia E71 each month, but likewise I’m aware that the amount of time spent chatting to people has decreased drastically over the past couple of years as I increasingly communicate via SMS, email and more recently Twitter.
Last week, whilst sat in a hotel lobby in Helsinki, where I was meeting fellow Conversations writer James, I decided to check my call log in a moment of aching boredom. On checking I was met with a very surprising number – I’d spent over 24 hours speaking on my phone in the last 30 days. An entire day chatting in a month where I’d probably only spent just over six of those days sleeping, and two days eating. I asked James to check his (he likes to talk), and he was mildly alarmed to see he’d broken the 50-hour mark.
Have you ever checked how much you talk on your phone each month? All you have to do is go into your phone menu, select the log, and call duration. It should be set to the last 30 days. Check it out and share your stats and thoughts on whether your findings were surprising or what you expected.

GLOBAL – I’ve been following Lance Armstrong on Twitter for a while now and it’s really making me think about how all this stuff is changing the way we interact. I was excited at first, sure. I was listening in, back in the day, when Lance announced he had cancer in a global press call (in a previous life I worked on Cycling Weekly magazine). Ever since I’ve been pretty obsessed, particularly with his spectacular recovery and subsequent success. But Lance has once again stepped beyond everyone else in his latest endeavor. His adoption of Twitter.
ESPOO, Finland – Yesterday, I had fun talking with folks about the new Ovi Theme. The theme was well received and I hope the Ovi team comes out with more fun stuff. I think they are just too modest and quiet, trying to cautiously deliver in an area that is new and growing for Nokia.
In the course of the discussion, folks were talking about three other things: a mobile medicine guide, a CEO from a large mobile device manufacturer discussing netbooks, and a new Twitter app in final rounds of a private beta (which sparked a thought). And it’s these three things I want to spread to the rest of you, so read on.
GLOBAL – There’s no stopping the current hurricane that is Twitter and although there are plenty of options for accessing Twitter on your S60 device (including Stew, Dabr and Twibble) but now there’s a new kid on the block thanks to the folks at MobileWays.de. News of Gravity comes courtesy of The Guru who reckons the app “runs great on any S60 3rd Edition smartphone”. We’ve yet to try it out, but going by Symbian-Guru’s review of the beta, it looks pretty appealing. Continue reading>>
