Unlocking the possibilities

GLOBAL – Nokia has been working hard with carriers in the US to bring new offerings to US-based consumers. Recently we saw the Surge (which Engadget’s Darren Murph quite liked) roll out on AT&T. But what of the many devices Nokia produces that aren’t carried by networks in the US, for whatever reason? Plenty are available (at varying times, compared to Europe) direct either from Nokia USA or through retailers. Nothing strange in this idea, save for the fact that for many based in the USA, buying an unlocked device is almost unheard of. So much so, the folks at Nokia USA have put together a video explaining what it’s all about.

Nokia 7205 Intrigue hits the USA

NEW JERSEY, USA – Nokia and Verizon today launched the new Nokia 7205 Intrigue. Packed with new multimedia and music features, the slick folding handset is clad in black with a slick hidden-until-lit external display. When an incoming call or text is received the external display lights up, so users can actually see the message, and even play music or control the alarm clock without opening the device.

Nokia Research Center is not a Willy Wonka phone factory

GLOBAL - Nokia Research Center may conjure up visions of a kooky sprawling Willy Wonka lab for phones tucked away in an address-less wilderness, but the reality is in some ways far more engaging. Far from fantasy, with labs dotted across the globe in ten locations, including Beijing, Bangalore, Nairobi, Tampere, Helsinki, Lausanne, Cambridge UK, Cambridge USA, Hollywood and Palo Alto, the Nokia Research Center (NRC) is a huge operation that to many may feel intangible – partly because a number of the projects that are being researched are indeed secret, but mostly because the connection between NRC’s research and real-life end products has appeared pretty disconnected.

But a more tangible connection between NRC and the real world may be beginning to emerge, helped simply by the very recent launch of its newly designed and more openly engaging website. Click through for the full lowdown.

Where do we go from here 2

USA – Following our posts last week on Service in the USA, we’ve had an excellent response. We know we don’t have all the answers, and appreciate the fact that those commenting have the patience to give us the time to get them. It’s important at this point to say we’re going to continue this conversation until we do get them. Right now though, I just want to put a line in and outline the key questions still outstanding. Amy Gahran, who’s driven this conversation from the users’ perspective has done an excellent job of rounding up the key issues in her latest post on Contentious.com, which i’ve now summarised.

Service in the USA – Nokia Software Update

USA – The original source of Amy Gahran’s problems stem from Nokia Software Update. The software responsible for ensuring the latest version of firmware is available on your device. In Amy’s case, updating the firmware on her new N95 turned the device into a brick, and resulted in her experiencing Nokia’s US customer service.

Service in the USA – Update

USA – During the first week of Conversations’ public debut, an issue was highlighted which hit perfectly with one of the reasons the site exists in the first place. Having had a terrible experience with Nokia customer service in the USA, Amy Gahran wrote a post on her blog about it. And then she told us about it on here. And boy, are we glad she did.
