Nseries head of design talks flagships, super-humans and Nokia N97

LONDON – Recently we managed to steal a few minutes with Axel Meyer, Nokia’s man at the design helm for Nseries and one of the key figures behind the creation of the newly released Nokia N97.

Exploring the Nokia N97 homescreen – video close-up

GLOBAL – This Friday sees the Nokia N97 officially touchdown on UK soil, so in the run-up to its launch we thought we’d highlight a smart new video showcasing its widget-savvy homescreen.

Tomorrow, we’ll be posting a video that focusses on the Facebook app in action on N97, following up with a separate video on Friday featuring an interesting chat we had with the designers behind the new Nokia N97 homescreen.

Peppery prognostications pertaining to the parcel

GLOBAL – Goodness. This Pass the Parcel game does not seem to end. We are in Day 12 and still have not reached the heart of the parcel. But that hasn’t dampened anyone’s spirits, as folks are still guessing away. Ranging from the Nokia N97 to the Nokia N86 (to a ton of great speculations), everyone seems to be getting into this guessing game.

As I did last week, I’d like to get you thinking of other possibilities. This last week has revealed some things that might make you think one way, though I would like to speculate about other things that fit the features that have been revealed so far. Mobile gesture design at Nokia – developing a new dialect of interaction

LONDON, England – The recent shift towards including innovative sensors into mobile devices has given birth to a new dialect of mobile interaction and communication in the form of physical gestures – the rise of accelerometers has already facilitated the adoption of a handful of instinctive solutions to common tasks otherwise reserved to the realm of a series of button presses, whether it’s flipping your phone face-down to silence it on the Nokia 8800 or turning a device into a landscape position to rotate the image onscreen on the Nokia N86 8MP.

The field of mobile gestures is a fascinating one that Nokia is keenly exploring and researching, with explorative designers Younghee Jung and Joe Macleod on the frontline. Last week we had the opportunity to chat to them at The Inside Story design day in London about their ideas on mobile gesture design, the research they’ve been doing, and the tools that have been developed to help test how well future mobile gestures might work.

Nokia Hackathon video diary (bleary eyes, loud snores and killer widgets)

MONACO, Monte Carlo – Creating a world-class widget is tough at the best of times, never mind trying to develop a brilliant bite-size app against the clock within a 24-hour timeframe. But that’s exactly what happened last month at the Calling All Innovators Hackathon, which saw 10 small teams of developers go head-to-head and test their skills to the limit to create a winning app. Each team was tasked with building a different widget based on 10 original ideas created by consumers.

The results were fantastic, and the 24-hour event has been compressed into a great little 3-minute video diary that features bleary-eyed developers coding like crazy (and occasionally snoring very loudly) to create a winning service. Nokia E71 climbs Everest and survives to video-blog the story to the summit

EVEREST, Himalayas – The Nokia E71 mightn’t appear the athletic sort, but it recently earned some extreme endurance kudos courtesy of climbing Mount Everest alongside world-renowned climber Marc Batard, with Nathalie Lamoureux (pictured) video blogging and reporting on the climb using Nokia’s extreme Eseries smartphone.
